Position Overview

Ithaca Energy is accepting applications for the position of Operations Geologist, located in our Aberdeen Office. The Operations Geologist will join an experienced team who to the Exploration and Appraisal Manager but work across the full asset base.

 

Responsibilities

  • Promote HSE values both onshore and in the offshore environment for Wellsite Geologists and relevant contractors.
  • Deliver as a key player in multi-disciplinary well planning and teams: pore pressure/fracture gradient analysis, temperature profile, review of offset wells highlighting key challenges (and mitigations), provide input to wellpath planning and well construction process.
  • Work closely with the Wells team to represent the views of the subsurface team.
  • Act as primary subsurface Point of Contact during drilling operations
  • Responsible for making geosteering decisions alongside the asset geologist, WSG (contract) and service company well placement engineers. The geosteering data will be integrated by the selected operations geologist, using Petrel, and update slides for management updates and decision making. Support will be required 24/7 during geosteering operations.
  • Familiarity with technologies required and optimum method of data acquisition in order to achieve Value Based Well Objectives (VBWO).
  • Compile key well planning information into geological prognoses and programs. Liaise with vendors to ensure high quality and timely service.
  • Attending and providing input to Uncertainty Management Plans and Risk assessments, particularly in relation to geological hazards and Formation Evaluation requirements/risks.
  • Generating material and presenting at Scenario planning / geological pre-spud and pre- section / wash-up meetings as required.
  • Act as the single point in communications between office staff and the geological service providers on the rig (wellsite geologists, mudloggers, LWD and others)
  • Ensure that daily reports and data are quality controlled and stored correctly
  • Compile all well results (notably End of Well Report and final comp log) and satisfy NSTA data requirements and timelines.
  • Gather data for WONS/WUNS submissions to NSTA for drilling-related consents.
  • Provide technical input to tender process for subsurface impacted services.

 

Qualifications

  • Degree qualified, BSc and Masters (or above) in Earth Science discipline
  • Good knowledge of Well Operations
  • Understanding of offshore operations gained by rig-site experience (Wellsite Geologist, Mudlogger, LWD engineer/other similar role )
  • Understanding of operational indications of pore pressure variance from expected, wellbore stability and implications for operations (losses, gains, connection gasses, cuttings/cavings habit and volume)
  • Able to manage delivery and QC of documents and reports from 3rd party vendors (e.g. Wellsite Geologist).
  • Familiar with GEO log drawing package – able to produce accurate Completion and summary logs.
  • Understanding of 3D geological software such as Petrel, for creating maps and sections etc. would be an advantage.
  • Thorough understanding of the methods and practice of geosteering operations.
  • Experience with Deep Reading resistivity tools and inversions preferred.
  • Self-sufficient pore pressure analysis a great advantage, as a minimum a good understanding of pore pressure techniques and hazards.
  • Geomechanics knowledge or skills advantageous
  • Good basic log interpretation skills.
  • Well planning and execution experience commensurate with candidate’s level of seniority
  • Familiarity with legacy wells reviews, well planning and data acquisition an advantage
  • Good decision making under pressure. Flexible during well operations- not constrained by office hours.
  • Able to attend morning calls, cover operations duty (weekends/after hours/ 12+hr shifts) as operational needs dictate
  • Strong verbal and written communication/proof reading skills and good presentation skills
  • Works collaboratively within direct team and with other departments and vendors.
